How to rank in ChatGPT

Published July 19, 2026 · 9 min read

There is no position one in ChatGPT. There is no list, no blue links, no rank to climb. There is a paragraph, and either your brand is in it or it is not. That single difference changes everything about how you optimise, and most teams are still applying Google-shaped tactics to a problem that does not have a Google shape.

Here is how ChatGPT actually decides who gets named, and what to change on your site.

Two paths, two different games

ChatGPT answers your prospects in one of two ways, and they reward completely different work.

The practical takeaway: the live-search path is the one you can move this quarter. And it runs through Bing. If Bing has not indexed your pages, ChatGPT cannot find them when it browses, no matter how good they are. Most teams obsess over Google and never open Bing Webmaster Tools. That is the gap.

Six changes that actually move the needle

1. Get indexed in Bing, then verify it

Submit your sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools and check the indexed count against your real page count. New domains routinely sit at one or two indexed pages for months while Google has the whole site. Use IndexNow to push updates instantly rather than waiting to be crawled.

2. Let the right crawlers in

Check your robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and ClaudeBot. Blocking them is a silent, total opt-out of AI visibility. Watch out for managed rules at the CDN level, which can block AI crawlers without ever touching the robots.txt file you wrote.

3. Answer in the first two sentences

Models quote what they can lift cleanly. Put a direct, self-contained answer immediately under a question-shaped heading, then expand below it. The same information placed in paragraph six is invisible to extraction, even though a human reader would find it fine.

4. Make your entity unmistakable

AI engines need to know what you are before they can recommend you for anything. Use Organization and Service schema, keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere, and describe your category in plain words on your own site. Vague positioning reads as noise to a model deciding whether you fit a query.

5. Show up where the engines already look

When ChatGPT browses, it usually reads listicles, directories, review sites and industry publications, not your homepage. Being described accurately on third-party sources moves your mention rate more than another blog post. Find the pages the engine cites for your category and get yourself onto them.

6. Publish an llms.txt file

A short file telling AI engines what your site covers and where the important pages are. It is not yet a formal standard, but it is cheap to add and it removes ambiguity. See our complete llms.txt guide for the format.

What does not work

  • Keyword stuffing. Models read meaning, not density. Repetition reads as low quality.
  • Hidden text aimed at bots. Prompt-injection-style instructions buried in your HTML get ignored at best and penalised at worst.
  • Claiming rankings you do not have. Engines corroborate across sources. Unsupported claims get dropped.
  • Waiting for it to matter later. The brands being cited today are building the corroboration that decides the next model cycle.

How to measure it

You cannot improve what you cannot see, and ChatGPT gives you no analytics. The only honest method is to ask the questions your customers ask, across every engine, on a schedule, and record who gets named. Track mention rate, position inside the answer and which competitors appear instead of you. Our free AI visibility checker gives you that baseline in about a minute.

The short version

Get into Bing. Let the crawlers in. Answer clearly and early. Be a legible entity. Be present on the sources engines already trust. Then measure, because in AI search the difference between being recommended and being invisible is not a position, it is a yes or a no. Frequently asked questions

Can you actually rank in ChatGPT?

Not in the way you rank in Google. ChatGPT does not publish a ranked list, so there is no position one to win. What you can influence is whether it names your brand when someone asks a question in your category, and which source it cites when it does. That is the real target.

How does ChatGPT decide which brands to mention?

Two paths. For questions it answers from training data, it draws on how consistently and clearly your brand appears across the web it learned from. For questions it searches live, it queries the web through Bing, reads a handful of results and composes an answer from what it can extract. Both paths reward clear, well-structured, widely corroborated content.

Does blocking GPTBot hurt my AI visibility?

Yes, for the live-search path. If your robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT cannot fetch your pages when it browses, so it will cite a competitor instead. Note that GPTBot (training) and OAI-SearchBot (search) are separate crawlers, so you can allow search access while still opting out of training.

How long does it take to appear in ChatGPT answers?

For the live-search path, as fast as your pages are indexed in Bing, sometimes days. For the training-data path, much longer, since it depends on model update cycles that happen a few times a year. This is why Bing indexing matters more for AI visibility than most teams realise.

Do I need different content for AI engines than for Google?

Not different content, but different structure. The same substance wins in both places. What changes is how extractable it is: a direct answer in the first two sentences under a question-shaped heading gets quoted; the same information buried in paragraph six does not.
